Rules of the Blog

What follows are a list of writing rules to follow on this blog in the future. In the past, I have broken almost all of these rules and I encourage everyone to let me know when I have broke another one. Some of these are adapted from other places and I apologize for not remembering where I originally got them. If you can cite it, please let me know.

  • If you are using a post on another blog for your inspiration, it is only worth writing about if there is an interesting question or you provide a unique viewpoint
  • Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
  • Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  • If it is possible to cut a word out and still maintain meaning and tone, always cut it out.
  • Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
  • Publish as fact only that which you believe to be true.
  • Credit your source.
  • Publicly correct any misinformation. Preferably with the cross out strike tag. This is done to recognize that a mistake has been made, as opposed to erasing it completely.
  • Write as if it can not be erased, edited, or changed. When major changes or updates are made, a note should be left to the readers. This will be done in italics at the top of the post in [brackets].
  • Be able to defend anything that you write on the blog.
  • When linking to another blog, use trackback and if easily done send an email to the author of that blog.
  • Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

These rules will be updated and changed as necessary. Feel free to recommend any new rules or attack current rules.

Code

HTML
DFMoore is coded using HTML with Movable Type. Javascript is used, but minimally, to ensure optimal functionality

CSS
The site uses Cascading Style Sheets for all layout and formatting, so it could look odd (but should still be readable) on outmoded browsers.

If you're having browser doubts, you can upgrade your browser. Style sheets are everywhere and they make such good sense.

Typography

Font
Mainly, I've tried to stay with Serif fonts when possible because I find them more readable. Times New Roman is my font of choice, but without style sheets it may show up in any number of fonts.

Quotes
I use blockquotes to denote long quotes on this site that I'm going to refer to. For shorter quotes, the standard " is used.

Production

Made with an IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP Professional

Hosting
DFMoore is hosted by Pixy Misa, who has been incredible to all of us Munuvians.

Software
The templates are hand-coded by me with Frontpage 2004 and the pages are rendered through Movable Type. Adobe Photoshop is used to prepare all of the graphics and banners.

Rights & Administrivia

Copyright
DFMoore is © 2004 by me, Daniel Moore, with all rights reserved. Feel free to use posts from the site as long as you give credit to me and only alter to correct grammar/spelling.

Linking
Please link to this site. And let me know. I will link back and probably start reading your site regularly.

Privacy Policy
I believe strongly in privacy rights and do not reveal any information on my site. I do read the logs of which servers come to visit and what searches are used to reach my site. This is for my curiosity and I sometimes post on general trends that I find, but I never add specifics. I think that we should have a Privacy Amendment to the Constitution. That is how strongly I believe in it.
